The Tiny Seed Mystery
Day 1 • Read in short parts. Talk about each part.
“I found a treasure!” says Malik.
Nia looks at his hand.
She sees a small, striped seed.
They are in their school garden in Trenton.
Ms. Rivera is their teacher.
“It looks like a pebble,” says Nia.
“A pebble cannot grow leaves,”
says Ms. Rivera. “A seed can.”
Nia looks for roots and leaves.
She sees none.
“How can it grow?” she asks.
“The beginning is inside,” says her teacher.

A Plant and Its Packed Lunch
A model of a seed, shown much larger than life.
Ms. Rivera shows them a picture.
“An outer shell covers a sunflower seed.
A seed coat helps protect the parts inside.”
“Like a jacket!” says Malik.
“Inside is an embryo,” says Ms. Rivera.
“An embryo is a tiny young plant.”
The seed holds stored food, too.
Stored food is food kept for later.
The young plant uses it as it starts to grow.
“A packed lunch!” says Malik. Nia laughs.
Later, green leaves help the plant
make its own food using light.

New Seeds and New Plants
Ms. Rivera shows them a life cycle.
A life cycle shows the stages of a living thing.
“The long word germination means a seed starts to grow,” says Ms. Rivera.
“A seed can start to grow,” she says.
“Then it becomes a seedling.
A seedling is a young plant.”
The seedling grows into an adult sunflower.
An adult plant is fully grown.
It can make new seeds.
“Can those seeds grow, too?” asks Nia.
“Yes, if they have what they need.
They can grow into new plants.”
The first sunflower will grow old and die.
It does not turn back into a seed.
New seeds can keep the cycle going.

A Mystery Worth Watching
“Will we have a tall plant tomorrow?”
asks Malik.
“No,” says Ms. Rivera.
“A sunflower takes many weeks or months.
We will look for small changes first.”
A seed needs water and air to start growing.
It also needs the right warmth.
Too hot or too cold may stop it from growing.
Not every seed grows.
Nia wants to see what their seed will do.
“Which part will come out first?” she asks.
“A root or a leaf?”
Malik gets his notebook.
Their tiny treasure has a story to tell.
Talk Draw and Wonder
1. How does the seed coat help?
2. Why is food stored inside the seed?
3. How can new plants grow after
the first sunflower dies?
Draw one part of the life cycle.
Tell what comes next.
Bring one seed question to class.
You do not need to plant or collect anything at home.
